| Periodontal or gum disease is a bacterial
gum infection caused by bacterial plaque or tartar (calcified
or hardened plaque). What many people don’t realise
is that gum disease, if left untreated, can destroy the fibres
and supporting bone that holds your teeth in place. Eventually,
of course, this means that your teeth will become loose and
may have to be removed.
This is why preventive treatments such as careful brushing
and flossing are so important, together with early
detection, in order to treat gum disease before it becomes
too serious.
There are different types of gum disease, some of which can
be cured and some of which can’t, although they can
be managed. Before we begin your treatment however, we’ll
talk you through your choices and show you how to care for
your teeth and gums in order to keep them free of plaque and
tartar now and in the future.
